TORONTO, CANADA -The Big Comfy Couch, the beloved children's public television show, has won the Midsouth Regional Emmy award for Children's Programming by the Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The program, which recently celebrated its 10th year on public television, also won the Emmy for Set Design at the 21st Annual Midsouth Emmy Awards banquet on January 27th.
"We are extremely proud that the series has been awarded the highest possible distinction for a children's television program," says Cheryl Wagner, the show's Creator/Producer. Executive producers Stephen Elsky, John Leitch and Richard Seet took home the Emmy for Children's Programming for The Big Comfy Couch episode "Apple of My Eye" where Molly, Loonette and Major Bedhead learn to make healthy food choices so they will feel good.
Karen Valleau, production designer for the series, won the Emmy for Set Design. "Combined with brilliant technical expertise, Karen's ability to see the world through childlike eyes enables her to design vibrant, inviting sets which create environments that inspire laughter, imagination and fun," says Wagner.
"Over the years, The Big Comfy Couch team has worked very hard to create a program that resonates with parents and children alike and teaches them core values that will influence their development for years to come," says Stephen Elsky, President and COO of Amity Entertainment. "Our partnership with Radical Sheep, which provided the production expertise, and with Angelo, Gordon & Co., which provided the financial support, has enabled us to produce programs that teach as well as entertain. It is an honor to be recognized for this effort, as well as for the exquisite set design that makes the show bright and fun to watch."
The Emmy awards round off a landmark year for The Big Comfy Couch. During 2006, the program received several awards for programming excellence, including the Dove Foundation's "Family Approved" seal, the Coalition for Quality Children's Media "KIDS FIRST!" endorsement, and the Omni Award for outstanding media production for children.
